1. Keep a folder with high-quality images of your work, along with an image list document with their title, size, year, medium, and description. Keeping this information together will make the process easier as this is information often asked when applying.

2. Don’t submit composite images unless you are asked to. Instead, provide images with good lighting, a clear background, and the whole work within the frame.

3. Carefully read the instructions and make sure that you meet the eligibility to apply, that you understand the cost (if any), and that your work fits within the theme or guidelines they are asking for.

4. Sometimes it’s not about applying to the most calls but rather about searching for opportunities that suit your practice and not how your practice can adapt to an opportunity.

5. Understand rejection is part of the process. Rejection is an important part of growing your practice and making a goal of how many rejections you get means that you are getting your work out there.

6. Be consistent. While your practice can be expansive, when submitting to a call, it's good to show cohesion or pick work from a series that fits the open call.

7. Take the time. Don’t try to do applications last minute, but schedule a time when you work on your application consistently.

8. Have different versions of your biography and artist statement saved. Keeping different versions depending on length, can speed up the process as you do not want to exceed the word limit they give you.

9. Have a clear goal/strategy for your applications. Is it about showing your work? Selling a work? Realizing a project or exhibition? Funding?
